Writer Matt Zoller Seitz, who penned the new “The Last Men Standing” script, spoke with EW on the sidelines of the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
The cast and producers were nominated for the Emmys for best original screenplay, directing, and cinematography, but did not win the prize.
(The Emmys are an industry honor.)
“I’m super excited for the awards, but it’s definitely a little bit bittersweet for me because I had such a good year,” Seitz said.
“I’ve got to say, my biggest regret is that I didn’t get to win it, because I did everything I could do and I was able to put myself in this position to win.”
He also addressed the criticism that he did not get his own script, saying that his wife, Jillian Bell, helped him get it in the first place.
“My wife was a tremendous voice, and she was incredibly kind and supportive,” Secker said.
“I had a very, very good relationship with [co-writer] Mark [Wahlberg], and Jillian and I were very fortunate to have a really wonderful relationship, and it was very easy to get this script in the right hands.”
Seitz said that he has no idea when “The Final Men Standing,” which is set to debut next month, will be released.
“We’re hoping it’ll come out at the end of the year,” he said.
The new “Last Men Standing”‘s cast includes John Goodman as the lead, as well as Michael Shannon as a former cop who goes undercover to track down his former partner.
“The movie has this wonderful sense of optimism, of optimism about the world, and how everything can go great,” Shannon said.
The movie will also see Michael Pena as the director of photography.
“It’s very much an ensemble cast, so the actors and the writers and the director are all working together,” he added.
The film’s production is headed up by Paul Thomas Anderson and his production company, and Seitz also said he’s worked with Anderson in the past.
He’s also worked with James Wan and Peter Jackson on “The Hobbit,” “Lord of the Rings,” and “King Kong.”
The film will debut at the Toronto International Film Festival, with a U.S. theatrical release set for July 18.
Seitz has not yet confirmed that the film will also hit international screens.
