The US government has paid more than $4 billion for a flat earth company that is accused of using its patents on flat earth to cheat competitors, the US Department of Commerce said on Thursday.
The deal with Flat Earth Products, based in North Carolina, will enable it to pay for the technology that allows flat earth models to be produced without the use of a laser or other expensive equipment, the Commerce Department said in a statement.
“This will allow Flat Earth to continue producing and distributing its products without having to rely on other firms to produce the flat earths that are the best known to science and mathematics,” the department said in the statement.
The flat earth theory was invented in 1883 by the German geologist and physicist Karl Schwarzschild, who suggested the Earth was not flat but round.
It was first proposed in the 1960s by physicist Lawrence Krauss, who proposed that the Earth’s crust was made up of spheres and mountains.
In the 1960’s, scientists began developing computers that could calculate the shape of the Earth.
In 1999, the American Academy of Science, in a report, said that the flat Earth model was “simply wrong” and argued that its predictions “must be ignored”.
“A flat earth is not the same as a flat Earth.
It is simply wrong,” the report said.
The US National Science Foundation awarded the firm $2.2 million in funding in 2016.
Flat Earth Industries has received $2 billion from the US government.
The company’s website lists Flat Earth Enterprises as the sole owner and principal developer of the flat-earth-based products.
“We are a global leader in the flat earthers industry, and have made a significant investment in our research and development, and are actively seeking additional funding to expand our technology and capabilities,” the company said in its statement.
Al Jazeera’s Chris Hulme, reporting from New York, said the deal shows that the US will continue to be a big player in the global flat-earthers market.
“It is also a clear sign that the United States is willing to be the first to enter into a long-term agreement with Flat-Earth Products to support its technology,” he said.
“The US is one of the few countries that still uses the flat model in its economic and scientific research, and is willing and able to help support a company that can use its patents to cheat its competitors.”
In fact, it is not hard to see why Flat-Earthers are so popular, since it offers an alternative to the models used by others and has been used to make many of the products in the market.
