A lot of people have told me the Pine Flat Lake is not suitable for skiing.
But that’s not true, says Jim Broughton, owner of Pinnacle Mountain Resort in Pinesville, California.
“The lake is very cold and wet and the weather conditions are not conducive to skiing,” he said.
“It is a very low-lying, low-hanging lake that sits in the middle of a large valley, and that means it can’t be swum in very easily.”
The lake has a surface elevation of 3,500 feet and a depth of 9 feet.
In fact, it is one of the highest lakes in the country, with a surface of 3.5 miles (5 kilometers) and a maximum depth of 6.5 feet (1.8 kilometers).
“The water level of the lake is really low, so it’s not that dangerous, even though you have to be careful because it is a fairly high lake,” Broughsons said.
But the ice in the lake can be treacherous and if you get into trouble, it’s very difficult to get out.
“You might not get out, but you will be able to get in and go to the restroom,” Boughton said.
So be sure to take a look at the lake’s website and the video of the skiing and water slide that’s posted to the Pinnacle website.
But if you’re worried about getting stuck, the Pines Flat Ski Area offers a little help.
It offers a map showing the path of the Pine Flats ice ski trail and a safety video.
“Just look at those three lines that go from one end to the other,” Baughton said in a phone interview.
“They are just there to give you an idea of where you are.
The lake is a short distance away from the resort, so if you go right up the hill from the ski area and park at the base of the hill, you should be able in about five minutes to get there.”
And if you have any questions about the Pine Lakes ice ski trails, the owner of the Pillsbury Ice Resort in West Palm Beach, Florida, also has an answer.
“When you first come to the resort it is only one hour drive from Palm Beach and the rest of the way you’re probably looking at another 40 minutes,” said Brian Dickey.
“I think that you need to be aware that you’re walking into a very remote area with a lot of terrain that’s very rough.”
